Everything you need to know

About the show

Legally Blonde: The Musical is a high-energy, feel-good musical comedy packed with memorable songs, big dance numbers, hilarious characters, and plenty of heart.

When fashionable UCLA sorority president Elle Woods is unexpectedly dumped by her boyfriend, Warner, she decides to follow him to Harvard Law School and prove that she can be the serious woman he thinks he needs. But Harvard turns out to be much more than a way to win Warner back.

With the help of new friends, Elle discovers her talent for law, finds confidence in who she really is, and learns that being true to yourself is far more powerful than changing yourself to meet someone else's expectations.

Funny, uplifting, and bursting with energy, Legally Blonde offers fantastic opportunities for principal performers, featured characters, dancers, and ensemble members.

At its heart, this is a show about self-belief, friendship, ambition, prejudice, and discovering your own value.

And yes — there will be a lot of pink.

Rehearsals and Performances

Rehearsals

Rehearsals will begin in February 2027, with the first couple of months focusing mainly on principal and featured performers and smaller groups.

Full cast Sunday rehearsals will begin in April 2027.

Additional rehearsals will take place on selected Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings for principals, featured performers, and ensemble members as needed.

Don't worry — this doesn't mean three weeknights of rehearsals! Individual cast members will very rarely be called for more than one weeknight rehearsal in any given week, and you will only be called when the material being rehearsed involves you.

A rehearsal schedule will be provided in advance so you'll know when you're needed.

At a Glance

February–March: Selected weekday rehearsals, mainly principals, featured performers, and smaller groups
From April: Full cast rehearsals on Sundays
Weeknights: Selected Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday evenings as required — very rarely more than one per person per week
Performances: First three weeks of July 2027

Legally Blonde is a big, energetic show, but we want the rehearsal process to be organized, enjoyable, and manageable for everyone involved.

A Note from the Director

For this production, the Director will be taking inspiration from both the stage musical and the original Legally Blonde film, particularly when it comes to characterization, relationships, comedy, and the overall world of the show.

Auditionees are encouraged to be familiar with both versions.

We love the characters audiences already know, but we're not looking for impersonations or carbon copies of previous performances. Bring us the recognizable spirit of these characters while making them your own.

All ages listed below are playing ages rather than performer ages. They are intended as a guide only, and we encourage anyone who feels they could convincingly portray a character to audition.

Scroll down past the character descriptions to see what you will be required to sing for the self tape for each character.

Legally Blonde character breakdown

Character Breakdown

Elle Woods

Playing age: 25–35

The heart of the show. Elle is confident, optimistic, determined, compassionate, and much more intelligent than people initially assume. She begins the story believing she needs to change herself to win Warner back, but gradually discovers her own ability, independence, and self-worth.

Elle should have warmth, vulnerability, and genuine emotional depth beneath her bubbly exterior. Her optimism isn't stupidity or naivety — she's perceptive, capable, and instinctively good with people, even when those around her underestimate her.

This is a major singing, acting, and dancing role requiring excellent stamina and stage presence. The performer playing Elle needs strong comic instincts while also being able to handle the character's more vulnerable and emotional moments.

Character: Bright, warm, determined, funny, charismatic
Vocal requirement: Strong contemporary musical theater/pop belt
Dance: Strong movement ability required
Accent: American accent required at audition

Emmett Forrest

Playing age: 28–40

A smart, hardworking Harvard law teaching assistant who becomes Elle's friend, mentor, and eventual love interest.

Emmett comes from a very different background from Elle and initially helps her become a stronger law student. In return, Elle encourages him to recognize his own worth.

Emmett should be grounded, genuine, and effortlessly likable. His relationship with Elle develops through friendship and mutual respect, so natural chemistry between the two performers will be important.

Character: Intelligent, kind, dryly funny, supportive, ambitious
Vocal requirement: Strong contemporary musical theater voice
Dance: Some movement
Accent: American accent required at audition

Paulette Buonufonté

Playing age: 40–55

Elle's wonderfully eccentric hairdresser, confidante, and eventual close friend.

Paulette is warm, funny, and romantic, with dreams of finding love and creating a better life for herself.

We're particularly interested in the heart underneath Paulette's comedy. She's had some knocks in life, but she hasn't lost her capacity for hope. Her friendship with Elle should feel genuine and mutually supportive rather than simply comic.

This is a brilliant character role requiring excellent comic timing, confidence, and warmth.

Character: Funny, quirky, warm, romantic, big-hearted
Vocal requirement: Strong character/contemporary musical theater voice
Dance: Movement required

Professor Callahan

Playing age: 45–65

A prestigious and intimidating Harvard law professor who demands excellence from his students.

Callahan is charismatic, intelligent, powerful, and accustomed to commanding a room. He should possess enough charm and authority that we understand why his students desperately want his approval.

As the story progresses, however, a much more calculating and predatory side of his character is revealed.

This role requires considerable presence and an actor capable of making Callahan genuinely formidable without turning him into a caricature.

Character: Commanding, sophisticated, intimidating, calculating
Vocal requirement: Strong character/baritone voice
Dance: Minimal

Warner Huntington III

Playing age: 25–35

Elle's polished and ambitious ex-boyfriend.

Warner comes from privilege and is highly conscious of status, appearances, and what he believes his future should look like.

Although his decision to leave Elle sets the story in motion, Warner shouldn't simply be played as a villain. He needs charm and confidence — we should understand why Elle fell for him in the first place, even as we gradually recognize his limitations.

Character: Charming, privileged, ambitious, polished, self-assured
Vocal requirement: Strong musical theater voice
Dance: Some movement
Accent: American accent required at audition

Vivienne Kensington

Playing age: 25–35

Warner's intelligent, sophisticated new girlfriend and one of Elle's Harvard classmates.

Vivienne is ambitious, capable, and initially dismissive of Elle, viewing her as someone who doesn't belong in their world.

Importantly, Vivienne has a real journey. As she comes to recognize Elle's intelligence, integrity, and ability, rivalry gives way to respect and ultimately support.

We're looking for someone who can bring strength and confidence to Vivienne while allowing the audience to see the person underneath her initially guarded exterior.

Character: Intelligent, composed, ambitious, sophisticated, guarded
Vocal requirement: Strong singer; more demanding vocal material will be assessed at callbacks
Dance: Some movement

Brooke Wyndham

Playing age: 30–45

A successful fitness entrepreneur and former Delta Nu sorority member who is accused of murdering her husband.

Brooke is glamorous, driven, physically confident, and fiercely protective of both her reputation and her business. She has a commanding presence and should immediately feel like someone who has built a successful personal brand.

Brooke leads the famously demanding "Whipped Into Shape," so this role requires excellent physical stamina, coordination, and the ability to sing confidently while performing sustained choreography.

Character: Energetic, confident, glamorous, tough, driven
Vocal requirement: Strong contemporary voice
Dance/fitness: Very strong physical stamina and coordination required
Accent: American accent required at audition

Enid Hoopes

Playing age: 25–40

An outspoken, intelligent, and socially conscious Harvard law student.

Enid is confident in her opinions and unapologetically herself.

A fantastic featured character role with opportunities for strong comedy and distinctive characterization.

Character: Intelligent, outspoken, individual, passionate
Vocal requirement: Strong ensemble singer
Dance: Movement required

Margot, Serena & Pilar

Playing age: 25–35

Elle's closest Delta Nu sorority sisters and her fiercely loyal support team. Throughout the show they also become Elle's imagined Greek Chorus, appearing to encourage, advise, and occasionally distract her.

All three should have distinctive personalities while functioning as an incredibly tight trio. We're looking for performers with huge energy, strong comic instincts, and excellent chemistry.

These aren't background roles — Margot, Serena, and Pilar help establish the pace, humor, and larger-than-life style of the entire production.

Character: Energetic, loyal, confident, playful
Vocal requirement: Strong singers with good harmony skills
Dance: Strong movers/dancers preferred
Accent: American accent required at audition

Kyle

Playing age: 35–50

The UPS delivery driver who immediately catches Paulette's attention.

Kyle has relatively limited stage time but makes a very memorable impression. This is a role for someone willing to embrace physical comedy and bring plenty of confidence and charisma to the stage.

Chemistry with Paulette is particularly important.

Character: Confident, charismatic, sexy, good-natured
Vocal requirement: Primarily an acting role
Dance: Confident movement/physicality
Accent: American accent required at audition

Dewey

Playing age: 40–60

Paulette's unpleasant ex-boyfriend.

Dewey is a smaller but memorable comic character role and offers plenty of opportunity for an actor to make a strong impression in limited stage time.

Character: Scruffy, selfish, comic, larger-than-life
Vocal requirement: Primarily an acting role
Dance: Minimal
Accent: American accent required at audition

Chutney Wyndham

Playing age: 25–40

Brooke's stepdaughter and an important witness in the trial.

Although a smaller role, Chutney has one of the show's most recognizable courtroom moments and needs an actor who can make an immediate impact.

Character: Defensive, emotional, intense
Vocal requirement: Primarily an acting role
Dance: Minimal
Accent: American accent required at audition

Ensemble

Playing age: 25+

The ensemble is a major part of Legally Blonde and will be heavily involved throughout the production.

Ensemble members portray a huge variety of characters, including Delta Nu sorority members, Harvard students, law students, courtroom characters, salon customers and staff, prisoners, party guests, and numerous featured and cameo roles.

There are plenty of opportunities for featured lines, solos, character moments, and dance features within the ensemble.

We're looking for performers who bring energy, commitment, and personality to the stage. Strong singers and dancers will have plenty to do, but there are also opportunities for performers whose particular strengths are acting, comedy, or character work.

Above all, we're looking to build an ensemble of distinct people rather than anonymous background characters. Whatever role you're playing, we want you to know who your character is and bring them fully into the world of the show.

First-Round Video Auditions

For the first round of auditions, performers will be asked to submit a video recording of the specified song extract for the role they wish to be considered for.

You do not need to prepare the entire song. Please use the specified audition cut.

The sheet music, audition cuts, and backing/practice tracks will be provided after you submit the audition form and will be included with the confirmation of your Google Form submission.

Those invited to callbacks may be asked to sing additional material from the show, read scenes, take part in character or chemistry work, and/or complete a dance or movement call.

Audition Song Requirements

Elle Woods

Song: Legally Blonde | Measures: 21–68 | Score pages: 275–276

We're interested in vulnerability, emotional connection, storytelling, phrasing, and vocal control rather than simply hearing Elle's biggest belt.

Additional material, including the more vocally demanding side of Elle, may be assessed at callbacks.

Emmett Forrest

Song: Chip on My Shoulder | Measures: 83–113 | Score page: 204

We're looking for warmth, sincerity, storytelling, and a contemporary musical theater sound.

Emmett's relationship and chemistry with Elle will be explored further at callbacks.

Paulette Buonufonté

Song: Ireland | Measures: 78–109 | Score pages: 192–193

We're interested in storytelling, comedy, timing, warmth, and the vulnerability underneath Paulette's larger-than-life personality.

Professor Callahan

Song: Blood in the Water | Measures: 228–256 | Score pages: 181–182

We're looking for authority, excellent diction, vocal confidence, charisma, and an ability to command the room.

Warner Huntington III

Song: Serious | Measures: 5–26| Score pages: 146–147

We're looking for charm, confidence, polish, and sincerity. Warner shouldn't immediately feel like the villain — we need to understand why Elle fell in love with him.

Vivienne Kensington

Song: What You WantKate's section | Measures: 49–64 | Score page: 156

Please note that this material is sung by Kate, rather than Vivienne, in the show. It has been selected specifically for the first-round Vivienne audition.

We're interested in musicality, intelligence, authority, diction, rhythmic accuracy, and characterization rather than making the initial video a test of Vivienne's biggest belt.

Vivienne's own more demanding vocal material will be assessed at callbacks.

Brooke Wyndham

Song: Whipped Into Shape | Measures: 7–22 | Score pages: 228–229

We're looking for vocal confidence, rhythm, personality, energy, and the commanding presence required for Brooke.

You are not required to jump rope or perform the show's choreography in your audition video.

Brooke candidates invited to callbacks should expect their movement, fitness, coordination, and ability to sing while performing choreography to be assessed in person.

Enid Hoopes

Song: The Harvard Variations | Measures: 61–77 | Score pages: 172–173

We're particularly interested in personality, diction, comic instincts, rhythmic confidence, and your ability to establish a distinctive character quickly.

Margot / Serena / Pilar

Song: Omigod You Guys | Measures: 11–47 | Score pages: 136–137

Candidates for Margot, Serena, and Pilar will use the same audition section.

We're looking for bright contemporary vocals, excellent rhythm, personality, comic energy, and a strong understanding of the Delta Nu world.

Individual characterization, harmony, dance, and chemistry between potential Margots, Serenas, and Pilars will be explored further at callbacks.

Ensemble

Song: Omigod You Guys | Measures: 32–64 | Score pages: 137–138

We're looking for confident singing, rhythm, diction, energy, personality, and full commitment to the musical style and world of Legally Blonde.

Performers interested in Kyle, Dewey, Chutney, or other featured/character roles without a dedicated first-round song should also submit the ensemble vocal cut.

Specific character and acting work will then be assessed at callbacks.

Callbacks

Callbacks will take place on:

October 3, 2026, October 4, October 8, 2026

Being invited to a callback may involve additional singing, acting, dance/movement, harmony work, chemistry reads, or other material selected by the creative team.

You may be required at one or all callback dates, depending on the role or roles for which you are being considered.

Additional callback material and instructions will be provided to those invited.

Video Audition Deadline: September 19, 2026

We can't wait to see what you bring to Legally Blonde!

Different from previous years, we are introducing a more formal process for 2025 to ensure the success of each show without burning out volunteers. For each show, we will be asking each cast member to indicate which committees they have the skills to join, and will assign a committee to each cast member to contribute to the show’s success.

Show committees

Committees will include front of house, makeup & hair, costume assistance, flyering, props, set build up, set tear down, social media, and photography. Even if you don’t have skills in hair and makeup for example, you can easily be on the flyering committee to volunteer some extra time distributing and handing out flyers to help sell tickets for the show.
